Pyramid Linking

I was asked about “Pyramid Linking” the other day and started to do some homework. I cam across this article

http://seoblackhat.com/2009/07/10/link-pyramids/

After looking through this article and reviewing it, I still think that while it may be a neat trick, someway. somehow, once Google and other search engines get wind of this little trick and figure out how to tell in their algorithms, the practice will end up hurting you more than it will help and it looks like a lot of dang work to boot.

The author said it himself….

“Yesterday, we discussed two of ways you can use bursts of spammy links to help you make money. But just because you have the ability to spam thousands of links a day to a single page doesn’t mean it’s the most effective use of the tool. What if I told you there is a way to launder those spammy links; a way to sift out the negative Google Karma to leave you with pure Link juice that Google uses to rank. Would you be Interested?”

Isn’t spam just that, spam, any way you slice it?

I’d stay away from the practice myself.

Also, at the end of the article, it said this….

“DO NOT INTERLINK YOUR ENTIRE NETWORK!!!
If you’re gonna do that, you might as well fill out a spam report on yourself with a list of all your sites and submit it to Google. Along similar lines, don’t use any of Google Products for these sites (like analytics, or Adsense, or Adwords . . . or even surfing to them with a Google Toolbar installed or Google Chrome) with the possible exception of the site at the top of your Pyramid.”

That’s probably good advice to those with 50 or 100 separate sites, but there’s also a benefit for doing one way links from all the sub-sites back to your main site, the “head’ of your funnel as well. In the case of many sub-domains pointing back to the main root site, I don’t see any downside. What about the case where you own all the sites and clearly the sites are related for reals and really should be interlinked, I don’t see any downside for that either. That’s the bottom line, keep it real, keep it honest, and you’ll almost always be just fine.

Anyone see it differently, make a comment, okay?

How My Sites Work

We’re all trying to get traffic to our websites.  There’s many ways to do that.  What makes one page better than another.  What and how does Google rate higher than another?  This is known as the Google algorithm and what we know for sure is that the actual details of it are a secret and everybody has a different theory.  We also know that it’s a moving target anyway.  What works today may not work tomorrow.  So how does all this apply to websites like ProspectGeyser.com and AdvertiseYourBusinessNow.com that claim they can bring in organic searches from Google and Yahoo like magic approximating products like Google Adwords and they do it for free?

There are several factors involved in what these websites do that make them very unique.  First, they use the keywords that people on the site enter themselves creating almost an unlimited number of keywords on a site with over 10,000 advertisers in use all at the same time.  It’s a viral site meaning some of the members have created their own pages and blog entries directing people back to the sites.  These create real, very valuable, one-way back links to the sites.  The content on each page is always changing and different based on the keywords people have chosen and the text on each page is different based on the product or service being advertised.  It’s a really big website with lots and lots of pages and content, all different.  It gets a lot of visits overall every day.  It’s properly setup for search engines, i.e. very search engine friendly with proper SEO (search engine optimization) done and submitted on a regular schedule.  These sites literally have been submitted to 1000s of search engines, some manually, even to some obscure directories you’ve probably never heard of which are cornerstones to a lot of other search engines.  Lastly, it’s the rotators.  The rotators throw up what looks like a completely different page to search engine web crawlers.  The site gets looked at multiple times a day by many search engines.  If you’re in the rotators which is the main site page, you just might be the one page that the search engine indexes that particular day at that particular time.  You stay listed for quite a while.   And what gets listed will be listed using the keywords the crawler found.

So all of these factors make these sites quite formidable  in the world of organic search traffic.  That’s not all the advertising that goes on though.  The site owners do massive amounts of advertising as well.  This also contributes to the overall site’s likability by the search engines.  So put all of that together and you can see why you would want to be in the rotators and why it’s worth upgrading.  And the commissions are such that 2 people who upgrade underneath you gets you memberships to these sites for free.  You can advertise your pages for free and there is still a lot of value to that.  Advertising is easier to sell than any other thing out there in internet marketing.  Absolutely everyone needs it.  If you advertise free advertising, you’re more likely to get someone to look at whatever else you are offering while they are signing up for their own account and they become a lead for you.  But as in any program, there is real value in the upgrade and what it offers.  The rotators and search engine are the thing.

So, you upgrade.  Over time, you have two people upgrade under you.  Whatever you paid, you made back now.  The upgrade was free.  In order to get 2 upgrades, you might have to have 30-40 people as leads under you.  Those are leads you may be able to work with at some later time for your own product or service.  Let’s compare this to Google Adwords.  30-40 actual hits to your website where they actually sign up plus probably 100s that looked and said no.  You pay an average of $5 per visit whether they signup or not.  40 x 5 = $200 bucks.  The other 200 that didn’t look cost $1000.  That’s $1200 bucks you spent.  Need I say more.

Start Here – Getting a Basic Understanding of Keywords

You have a have at least a basic keyword understanding of keywords and how they relate to a website and search engines.  Understanding how keywords work is  critical and should be one of the first steps for anyone new to online marketing.

Keyword research, keyword placement, phrases and a basic understanding of what they call latent keywords are basic to SEO (search engine optimization).  SEO is basically the art of making a website visible in as many places on the net as possible to attract as much traffic and visitors as possible.  The little things all add up.

There are so many factors that make for good page rankings, that’s why most companies hire someone.  All these subjects are covered here within this blog somewhere.   All of them matter.  All of them contribute to your site’s success.

  • Domain Name Url
  • Meta Tags
  • Keyword Density
  • LSI Keywords (Latent Semantic Indexing)
  • Backlinks
  • Paid Submissions
  • Google Places – Local Searches
  • Keyword Density
  • Phrases and Words   (short or long tailed)
  • Free Site Submission
  • Manual Site Submissions (DMOZ)
  • Analytics
  • Blogs
  • Social Networks

So what the heck is a keyword anyway?  Put simply, it’s what someone who is looking for you types in on their keyboard in a browser on a search engine like google.com or yahoo.com.   Next time you’re in google looking for something, watch what google suggests as you type.  Those suggestions are what other people type in.  So, go to google, try to find your competition.  What did you have to type in?  That’s the basics, the rest is studying what and how often people type in certain words and phrases using the google keyword tool, looking at what your competition is using and using analytics over time to adjust the words you are using.

So wow. where do I start?  Start here, decide what your website is all about.  Use the Google Keyword Tool to do some research.  Decide on what keywords, 2 to 4 words that make up a phrase.  These will be your main focus.  People try and use 50-75 keywords and phrases, but you can only really optimize a website for one ot two single phrases well.  Once you have your main phrase, go to godaddy.com or namecheap.com to buy the website name.  Use their tool to get some ideas and find what’s available.  For example, I have a Web Design Company and I live in Paso Robles California, so this was easy, I came up with http://www.pasorobleswebdesign.com.  You may have a sales software company.  Both of those words are so common, you need to go latent.  Latent means finding words that relate, something that buying sales software would solve.  Like sales rep reports, order tracking, or  client management.  Buy your domain name based on your keywords, not your company name.  Then come back here often and try and go down that list above, implementing each thing one at a time.

Basic keyword training and knowledge should be one of the very first steps to take before anything else here. Without the fundamentals mastered, success online with anything will be slow in results if any results are found at all. Many come here, many fail, but for the most part the failure was due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of what has to be done here.

Put the income generating aside and focus on generating traffic, this was the key for all of us who have found success online.
